"The Word"
by Rev. C. David Underwood
John 1:1-18
Sermon Notes from 17 December 2000
Logos - word. Divine revealer
- Nature of the incarnation. He became man. It was unthinkable to Greeks that God could become man. Why did Jesus have to come?
- To identify with us. He knows our feelings but with no sin. Hebrews.
- To represent us on the cross. Romans. Isaiah 53. He bears our sins. He makes atonement for our sins.
- To teach us the Nature of God. Jesus Christ was the perfect representation of God.
- To teach us how to live. Look at Jesus to see God.
- Our response.
- We must receive Him. His own did not receive him. This is still true today. But welcoming Him leads us to adoption. We are orphans, but can be made into "children of God" (v. 12).
- We must worship him. Worship is a common response in the nativity story. But worship means nothing when we give him our leftovers.
- We must proclaim him. Like John the Baptist. Like the shepherds. We can be a voice to point people to the light.
